ASUS Zephyrus S (GX531) Gaming Laptop Review and Benchmarks

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus S is a thin and powerful gaming laptop, featuring Intel’s latest 8th gen i7-8750H CPU, Nvidia 1060 graphics, and a 144Hz screen with 3ms response time. In this review I’ll cover the features the laptop has to offer, thermals, battery life, undervolting, overclocking and perform a series of game benchmarks to help you see how it performs and if it’s worth buying.

Why no M15 review yet?

Wacky xx says:

I have a question for the tech nerds out there
My gpu usage isn’t hitting 99% on low settings on any game(pubg, fortnite) its 50% to 60%
But on ultra its always 99%
Idk why this happens i mean i want more fps for my 144hz screen
My nivdia profile is already set to max preformance
I have i7 8750h , Gtx 1060 temps never exceeds 77degrees
I want to force my gpu to use 99% at all settings all games

Hazbi Selmani says:

Asus did something wrong here:
– *24GB RAM* one channel at least 2 channel 32GB
– *Only Nvme SSD* If you are gamer you want HDD because games are very large and require much space. SSD are great for video creators but to store games is overkill. Btw have you tried to buy 1TB M.2 SSD?
– *Upgrading* Unless you have experience you can open it up but if you don’t have you might damage it while openning
– *Lack of ports* At least add some common ports
– *No palm rest* Buy one extra and always carry with you.

My 17″ HP OMEN 2016 can get 4-5 hours normal usage & 1hour Gaming.
Don’t go for gaming thin & light

I’m really digging the Asus’s gaming laptop nowadays.

they feel really innovative and can see they are trying out unconventional ideals (the lift for air cool, number pad/keypad)
especially love how there aren’t excessive red and black design as well.

I just hope they get their Scar edition ones capable of Intel gpu during non-gaming cuz the battery drain is harsh.
And also the cooling to be better managed…

Eber Lazareen Ignatius says:

Helo jarrod, is the 8th gen processor for laptops compatible with 2133mhz ddr4 ram stick?

bigbenisdaman says:

How does laptops like this perform with the screen shut? Like if hooked to dock/external monitor.

Finally the FUllL Review

DrawTimeInc says:

I miss the design of the g750 and g75 series. Those things never got hot or warm. You could upgrade more and remove the battery. Asus new laptops kinda suck. I’d rather have a thicker cooler chassis than a super thin laptop. I already got a surface pro and iPad pro for portability.

Ryan Cho says:

Hopefully they’ll add Thunderbolt 3 to the next Zephyrus…then show it to us at CES.

Brad Haines says:

i cant deny its a neat design that works, but i really question the reliability of it under abusive usage lol. i travel for a living so that’d smack around more than it should, and id be MAD if it fell apart

Carlos Motta says:

Hi, Jarrod.
JT, mate, JT…
Helluva machine!!! Beautiful, powerful, runs really cool out of the box, and a simple UV squeezes max power of it, with the benefit of not a single degree increase (in fact it’s the most powerful and coolest setup in the graphic). Amazing!! Ok, of course it has some “flaws”: it’s not suited for the student, for instance, due to poor battery life, there’s no ethernet port, a RAM stick is soldered, but wth? For me, a gamer with little room in my room (lol), it’s like a dream. A pity it will remain just a dream.
All the best, my workaholic friend.

Nice video as always.

Keep up your amazing videos Jarrod!

AC says:

The only problem with this laptop is its battery life. I’m using one in college right now and without playing video or games it died after 2 classes hardly lasting 3hours

AwesomeMan says:

Hey quick question, I undervolted my laptop while plugged in and everything went well. But when I use it on battery the under volt doesn’t carry over. Is that normal? And is it safe to under volt the laptop on battery only?

Andrewgyny says:

Still waiting for a 2tb SSD version.

Duppex says:

I really like this laptop but without G_Sync, Its a no go for me. I had the Zephyrus M, which was great but a little to large and hot for my liking

josh6499 says:

Is there such a thing as a 2 in 1 gaming laptop with active pen support?

IamKrishna says:

This is awesome but The mouse placement is Not okay at all.. it feels uncomfortable… btw nice video bro ? What about the Fans and placement for Cooling arrangments

suppernoova says:

Lol that rainbow 6 fps isn’t real

Uvuvwevwevwe Onyetenyevwe Ugwemuhwem Osas says:

Do you ever get tired of reviewing the i7-8750H?
Would be nice to see reviews of other cpu’s.

Jean Chon says:

Jared, how do you run BF5 on this. the certified nvidia drivers provided on the Asus website are too old and BF5 gives and old driver pop-up notice and won’t launch

joe TheBet says:

Why can’t Asus just make a Zephyrus M with thinner bezel. Is it really to slap a thinner bezel screen?
