Xiaomi Mi Drone Flight Test Review Jellybeans and Lollipops

It may be important to use a newer version of Android with the Mi drone. My previous video review used Jellybean (V4.2) and encountered disconnect problems. But the quadcopter worked great when using a newer phone with Lollipop (V5.1). Find the Mi here http://shrsl.com/?~daju

– Very modular design. Easily foldable & stowable.
– 3 Axis easy snap-in gimbal with tilt control
– Camera 1080p 60fps or 4K
– Long range (1K/2K) 2.4 Ghz control and FPV achieved via printed circuit board (PCB) antennas.
– Extra precise GPS + GLONASS + Visual Positioning
– Automatic return to home/landing on loss of signal or low battery, or manual return to landing at push of a switch.
– Automatic takeoff and landing
– Orientation Lighting
– Large Battery 17.4V 5100mah. Gives up to 27 minutes flight time

“Mi UAV” App Features
– Compass and controller calibration
– Satellite and quadcopter status monitoring
– 720p FPV
– Three automatic flight modes: Fly to Point, Waypoint Route, Circle Point
– Real time position tracking

– Excessive flight restrictions. Can not fly further than 50m altitude or 100m horizontal range until the quadcopter has achieved 5 hours cumulative flight time. Additionally, quadcopter will not proceed beyond hover if flown in restricted areas.
– Official Xiaomi “Mi UAV” app is in Chinese. It’s quite impossible to use unless you know Chinese. There is a non official translated version in English, however it is an older version of the app.
– The English translated version of the app kept crashing on me when using an older version of Android (Jellybean V4.2). First would lose FPV view, then would lose app connection with quadcopter (although I still maintained manual GPS position hold flying). However, the Mi worked fine as shown in this video with Lollipop (V5.1).

The problem with xiaomi and their product launch is messy. For some things they don’t seem to have a target and they just try to throw one of their thousands of item and see which one stick, and they still fail to build on top of already successful product.

In particular with this drone is they have not publicly launched it but they also didn’t have any pre-launch event as big as gopro karma or dji mavic (even though they have a live streaming launch way back in May and the whole world knew about it. Yet they failed to beat the karma’s launch date which is questionable what the hell XiaoMi is thinking).

The original pricing for the 1080p version is 2499 Yuan is 375 USD. And because it’s a pre-production pre-official-launch, the resellers jacked it up to 650+ USD which puts it closer to a P3 and the 4k (which no one is selling) will be closer to the now available karma and mavic.

After 5 months and still no word from xiao mi on what’s happening, when is the official (REAL) launch date, (and obviously no free worldwide shipping and instead uses resellers who likes to jack up prices) as if it didn’t happen at all.

That’s why xiaomi fails on so many things (and you don’t realize it because it fell off the wayside and nobody talked about it because it never picked up the sales after having dramatic launch events) but hey, they’re the king of consumer electronics now in China so they pretty much don’t care.

Ballistic Blitz says:

Hey there quadcopter 101!! I need your wise advice. What would be the best good sized quadcopter for under $50?

Essco Lab says:

Possibly the drone with the best potential you’ve reviewed. Someone will hack the Geofence in a few months. This does appear to be the best one out there bang for buck right now…

abbeyglencircle says:

johnnie su says:

for better video quality, you have to lower the antennas

michael markey says:

as monster said the quad has altitude and height restrictions until a certain amount of flight time is amassed. a newbie stage if you will.

Michael Galiga says:

Hey, what would be the best drone to buy in the 50 dollar range?

cuyler wilkinson says:

I just watched a russian copy of your 1st review. I know your vehicle and was wondering where a desert was in russia. Also viewed another one where the quad reached a 500 meter boundary then returned home.

Jonny_Schools says:

I love your videos! Just get an iPhone. They have the most stable operating system and fastest processing speeds.

Zach Webb says:

I think the path is something that works from takeoff rather than in-flight.
Don’t have the drone, just speculation.

NoN Stop Drones says:

I really like your videos

zipngo1 says:

I never really wanted a drone to interface with my phone. I will say the video looks steady and clear. Does this require a phone or will a small tablet work? I think I want one.

Phantom4Flyer says:

Lollipop is so old already. Marshmallow is out and N is in the beta.

Brendan Cunningham says:

BTW the 100 meter cap is moronic. You could land at 100m from takeoff, take off again and go 200m total. Then repeat and you can go as far as you want. What a bad limiter.

Villager#9 Villagers are awesome! says:

Hey Quadcopter 101, you should review this drone: https://www.amazon.com/AOSENMA-quadcopter-1806Brushless-Gimbal-Camera/dp/B01LWOAPCC/ref=sr_1_25?ie=UTF8&qid=1477880907&sr=8-25&keywords=drones+with+camera+and+gps I’ve been looking into it but idk if it’s good or not.
