Tested: Skydio R1 Autonomous Drone Review

We review the Skydio R1 Frontier Edition, the first autonomous drone we’ve tested that lives up to its promises of hands-free flight! We’re so impresssed by the Skydio R1’s ability to navigate around obstacles and track fast-moving subjects–its movements were almost otherworldly. Watch it chase us as we try to evade it!

Aleen Baruah says:

DJI should buy this company and its tech

TheUAVpilot says:

Can the software be updated in the future to address some of its limitations you mention?

djorgen says:

Meh. Mavic Air ftw 😉

peterthinks says:

“Mom, I’m gonna go play hide and seek with the drone”
“OK, have fun dear..”

Sergeant Avakkado says:

This is gonna take the annoying sports vlogger to a whole new level…

David Haldane says:

Great Review!

superowl91 says:

to expensive for an amateur and not enough control for a pro. (expect DJI to buy them out within 12 months)

Green69Hornet says:

Impressive how it flys through the woods!

mx2000 says:

I think they should make a ‘pro’ version with a better camera asap. It’s a really cool and novel thing and $2,500 is definitely within the budget of serious enthusiasts and pros. But the video output looks visibly worse than what you get from your average dji or handheld, and this kind of spoils the effect.

Mitch King says:

Are Predator Drones fully autonomous?

Great-ish Owl says:

7:25 Imagine if Norm dropped his phone at that moment as the lady with the baby stroller looked up, and it started following her. As she started to run it starting to follow. lol She would freak tf out.

RJ Nash says:

10:32 Lookin’ all swag an shit with his lil’ walkin’ styles 😉

Matthew S says:

Tested why no reviews on the dji Mavic Air?

Arthur Brown says:

It has a sub-standard picture at the moment and if you watch the footage carefully, it can’t keep up with the data rate when there is a lot of information in the scene. They don’t respond to feedback on their Skydio Youtube channel which is very off-putting, especially when you’re thinking about what support service they have. Also, it’s very expensive considering that in my opinion, it’s still in beta and does not align with other better drones on the market.

Damodar626 says:

Could you imagine this on an airsoft field and not just record yourself with go pros on your head and gun

Cristian Marturet says:

I can see this being enough for travel vlog type videos and shows to get nice b-roll, hopefully enoguh people buy this so it has a better chance to improve this type of tech in the future (you know, offer and demand ‘n stuff)

Chris says:

Discgolf omg

bazwert says:

it would be neat if it could track you via your phone

Mad Nick says:

Yep. We are fucked. Skynet puts an automatic gun on that and we are soooooooooo screwed

Ethan Cox says:

Insane amount of calculations going on, I’m going to assume before watching the video that the battery life is like 20 minutes…its a cool first concept/product though.

Edited: Just googled it…16 minutes at best

TheOneTrueKaliban says:

“Skydio”…………..Oh, that is just TOO damned CLOSE! “If you’re reading this, you ARE The Resistance!

johnfarmingdale says:

My budget is about $1000 max on these type of drone cams.

DeusExAstra says:

This little thing is already better than Uber self-driving cars at avoiding obstacles

TheTechnoPilot says:

I feel like this is much more of a initial Tesla Roadster, not the Model S, that’s not a reasonable comparison.

Reed Bowman says:

What about Lead or Orbit mode when moving at high speed? Did you test that? I only saw follow and side follow on the mountain biking. I’d like to see how well it does at that (pretty serious) challenge.

Probably Not Cereal says:

looks like its made for dumb rich people that dont know what theyre doing with its over implification
