Home automation is AWESOME.

That’s one reason I asked SmartThings to send me their Smarter Home Starter Kit.
I wanted to check it out because a few weeks back a home was robbed just a few doors down from us. Instead of getting an expensive home security service I decided to review the different home automation options.
SmartThings was kind to send me their kit…as an aside, I don’t do paid tech or tool reviews, I just like trying new gear 😀
The Kit allows you to control and monitor your home from your smartphone. This video will show you how to setup and use the SmartThings Smarter Home Starter Kit.
This bad boy comes with 6 different devices
-SmartThings Hub
-Smart Power Outlet
-SmartSense Open/Closed Sensors (2)
-SmartSense Motion Sensor
-SmartSense Presence Sensor
The Hub allows the kit to communicate with your smartphone via the SmartThings mobile app. Internet and WIFI are needed.
All you have to do is plug the Hub into the power supply, hook it up to the WIFI router using the provide ethernet cable, and then connect it to the SmartThings app on your phone.
My personal favorite device is the open/closed sensor because it tells me when our garage door is open or closed. This is great for those of us who have memory problems, lol.
Setup is easy, you can totally do it yourself. And there are no monthly fees unlike with traditional home monitoring systems.
SmartThings allows you to control lights, locks, thermostats, electronics, and more
They even have a water detection sensor that can tell you if you have a water leak…this is something I totally want for our aging hot water tank!!!
TIME magazine voted this one of the top 10 gadgets of 2014 and it’s a 2015 CES Editor’s Choice Award winner.
It’ll work with Zigbee, ZWave, WIFI and other standards. Plus, you can use it with iOS, Android, and the Windows Phone.

Hi Jeff, pls I need video of home automation
Great video Jeff, I’m actually going to be picking one of these up after watching.
I have questions about the motion sensor. How sensitive it it? Will it adequately detect motion 20ft across the room? …and… How quick are the timeouts? When motion stops, how quickly can it tell?
