Hi, this is Jay P. Morgan. Today on The Slanted Lens Kenneth and I have the new Panasonic GH5 in house. We’re taking a look at this micro Four Thirds mirrorless DSLR-style camera. We were pretty impressed with it’s video capabilities, and thought the dynamic range and creamy tones were also very nice. Take a look and let us know what you think about this update to the long loved GH4.

Keep those cameras rollin’ and keep on clickin’.

A couple of comments:

IMO you can’t review still image sharpness with in-camera jpegs unless you turn down the baked-in noise suppression. Panasonic tends to be very aggressive with their default settings. Look at raw files or turn that noise suppression down.

Although the zoom lens you tested is new, there are better options for m43 if you are evaluating quality and/or need more options in depth of field control. Fast (f1.2) primes also allow you to shoot in lower light without raising the iso.

Eric Currence says:

Is it just me or is this chicks neck long AF?

Jeff Wang says:

absolutely a Paid advertising, Please go and see MAX YUEY real review. the Focus is so bad.

Sash Burbon't says:

iso800 on m4/3 is crap
also iso200 on FF is crap
only iso50 on LargeFormat is maybe ok for me…
(FF iso200 i hide myself and watch it’s pics on a mini smart phone which is 20 feet away so i dont see the noise… and my friend here beside me also agrees with me…, so it must be the truth)

Chad Christian says:

Great information. I think your beautiful model in the background is going to freak out any minute from boredom lol.

airfox says:

picture profiles for yummy skin on gh5? ive been using the ultra portrait on my gh4.

RickyisHere says:

Is that Marla Singer?!?!

prettdboy says:

She totally has arm pit hair at 4:40 & 7:00….smh lawd have mercy

Sammy G Art says:

Great to see some Panasonic love here! I don’t think I’ll make the jump ( I have a GH4) but this definitely is interesting! Also as side note Just as viewer I was totally confused on the ISO tests I had to rewind it to figure out you were testings STILL ISO ( should be obvious lol ) so when the second iso test came up I was like what???. maybe post up a video tag that says still’s and video’ ISO. anyhow not complaining just suggestion.

Vici Martynov says:

Err no its not the first, the Leica SL has now been out for over a year with 4K 4:2:2 10-bit format. However Leica work hand in glove with Panasonic so no surprise there. The GH5 is a great camera and it costs a fifth of the price of a Leica SL 😉

RdotJON Creations says:

What lens/lenses used?

Evan Bartlett says:

How does the ibis compare to the EM1 mk II ?

SupremeGrind Fitness says:

Hey guys I’m thinking about buy a metabones XL for the gh5 and put on a sigma 18-35..what you think ?

Ozren Putarek says:

GH5 is a noise producer just like GH4, its a great camera with lots of cool features, but the sensor is junk.

Jacob says:

That chick has an armpit fro!

Cocina Topia says:

Call the police, they used the GH5 for stills!!

Full frame crispness? Resolution has nothing to do with sensor size. Such BS.

Timothy Hines says:

I was wondering what the name of the model is

Jeff Wang says:

Ha Ha Ha Ha. Special thanks to PANASONIC. lol. People get paid and never tells reality

Objectively, the camera is a homerun and I expect sales to reflect that. Absolutely usable up to ISO 3200 for video.I personally think one of the drawbacks of the Sony a7 success (I own one) is the increasing obsession with pixel peeping noise. The video footage from it, properly exposed is absolutely gorgeous.

For the record, grading footage with FilmConvert by default adds noise to the footage. So if you shoot vlog-l, and color correct it in say Resolve, THEN grade using FilmConvert, you just added noise/grain. it’s part of the look of the grading software.

The fairest review of this camera should be a shoot and process by hand. And as recommended by Panasonic apply NR as needed. vlog-l by design is not clean out of the camera.

But to be fair, neither is Sony slog2 or slog3. Those are also noisy gammas, not talked about a such because the sony are still super clean camera but absolutely slog is also a noisy gamma. Hopefully, it grades out, but not always.

Anyway, too man features to go over on this camera. But, imo, I think it’s a homerun and other manufacturers have a tough road to plough this year.

SAMMY B says:

what macbook pro stats would you recommend for smooth 4k video editing?

Graham Harris Graham says:

The model in the background is bored. Looks like she’s hoping Gerard Butler might walk by and save her.

DK says:

She is Pretty

mark shirley says:

Video AF in other reviews looks poor so I’m comfused about this camera.

You, 17:28 “Who’s gonna shoot 12.800″…

Hahaha, some of us are always in this kind of situation my friend. That’s why we use the.. you know which camera.

ConorCL92 says:

Wrong. It is not the 1st camera that can record 422 10 bit. It is however the 1st to do it internally

Christopher O'Grady says:

“Think it’s one of the best options for video at this price point”
So non committal! Have some god damn conviction.
It is the best video camera at this price point period.
It it one of the best video cameras period.

People on YouTube use too many qualifiers in sentences.

Khalid Saif says:

great job guys thank u

Croo ookie says:

Why did you guys do the first dialogue with the poor model just standing in back…. so awkward

Kirk Monteux says:

Instead of having that model bored to death in the background, you could have her sent to grab a decent lunch so she might gain some weight.

Ziming Xie says:

The noise at high ISO is definitely less in video at the same 800-3200 than in raw stills.

simon gentry says:

i love your reviews – an observation – instead of merely mentioning ‘pro’ settings or what it means to be a commercial photographer half way through your review, perhaps start by setting the bar high, how to approach a shoot, the equipment, the knowledge etc… a disclaimer of sorts – dumbing down our industry, permitting viewers to actually believe ALL they need is a fully auto digital body, kit lens, no flash system or the knowledge of lighting or ASA vs ISO and the camera’s sensor range/light range – and what post is today vs what getting a roll of film developed meant about the art and relationship between the photographer and developer – how they both fit into a photographer’s work flow, is why people expect to only pay $500/$1000 for a wedding photographer, and why a business doesn’t understand the difference between a day rate of $3500 with 20yrs exp and watching your review, running out to buy the gh5, kit lens and thinking they just saved money shooting their own product. it’s clear more and more of what is becoming the ‘norm’ in ‘reviews’ is picking 5 features of any given camera, pitting them against either the previous model or competitor’s while leaving out HOW a camera is just a tool in a vast array of gear, experience and talent.

Dustin Dilworth says:

The autofocus isn’t going to rock, but I question what autofocus setting you were using in that shot. The fact you didn’t mention specifically what type of autofocus settings you were using makes me wonder if it was operator error?

Ezbz Pop says:

“who the hell is going to put anamprphic lens on it?” that’s the deal maker for me buddy!

spinnerMPS3 says:

love this channel, very honest and great tests. it’s great to understand what limitations there are with the GH5 as opposed to hearing only positives. you guys answered everything I was dying to know. thank you (PS I’ll still buy one).

Phil eMotion says:

Loved your review, thanks guys !

TheEIements says:

The lack of detail is in part due to the sensor and but also like you guys mentioned due to the lens. Slap the oly 40-150, 75, new 25 1.2, or the panasonic leica 42.5 and you’ll get that eyelash detail. I even use the cheap sigma 60mm f2.8 and get pretty amazing detail.

Je Park says:

If this had a FF sensor there’s no way it would have the amount of features it has at the price point it’s charging. FF mirrorless is priced substantially higher without having nearly as much in terms of video features or even still features (no dual cards, no fully articulating screen, no touch screen, no joystick, etc). An equivalent FF sensor specced out like this would cost at least 2x this and you’ll have larger, heavier, and probably more expensive lenses. FF has its uses and applications but it’s not always FF or bust.

hzubovi1 says:

Why isn’t it good to shot V log in low light situations?

Wayne Nicholson says:

Love the model and how bored she looks during this review….:-) Classic…
